On February 29, 2008, a meeting was held at the home of Vickie Schoppe to discuss the idea of creating an Alief retired employees organization for the purpose of allowing retired Alief employees an opportunity to maintain the professional and personal relationships developed in AISD and to provide scholarships and service to Alief students. 

To maintain the tradition of the Alief Family, it was decided from the beginning that the organization would be open to ANY retired employee or former employee of AISD, whether teacher, administrator, paraprofessional or support staff.   

A second meeting was held on March 25, 2008 in which the organization's name was determined--Alief Retired Employees Association, a slate of officers selected and the organization's by-laws were edited.

AREA has applied for and is awaiting approval as a federally recognized 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization.  Approval of this non-profit status is expected following submission of the application for non-profit status accompanied by the AREA By-laws.
